The town of Tok is the first community inside the U.S. border along the famous Alaska Highway and the town originated as an Alaska Road Commission camp serving the construction of the Glenn and Alaska Highways during World War II. Today it is predominantly still a staging post on the “Alcan” (the Alaskan Highway) for travellers venturing north west towards Fairbanks (206 miles), south west to Anchorage (328 miles) or curling back towards Eagle (161 miles). Tok serves as a trading centre for the surrounding Athabaskan villages of Northway, Tetlin, Tanacross, Mentasta, Eagle, and Dot Lake. It is also known as a centre for dog breeding, training, and mushing.
