The historic community of Talkeetna is located in the shadow of Mt. McKinley, at the junction of the Chulitna, Susitna and Talkeetna Rivers. It represents what many travellers have in their minds eye of what an Alaskan town is going to be like before they travel. Log cabins, clapboard storefronts and remnants of its gold mining past. A gold rush to the Susitna River brought prospectors to the area and by 1910, Talkeetna became a riverboat steamer station.
Today, the population is only 363 and thirteen of Talkeetna's 24 buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places. Alaska residents and visitors come to Talkeetna for the incredible views, breathtaking flights to Mt. McKinley, world-class salmon fishing, rafting and boating excursions, and many other activities.
