Sitka

Situated on Baranof Island, Sitka actually sits outside the Inside Passage, and most passengers arrive by tender as the harbour is too small to accommodate large ships. Sitka has a Russian heritage stemming from the fur (sea otter) trading days of the 18th century and one which can still be seen today with the onion-shaped dome of St Michael’s Cathedral. Having passed into American hands, Sitka evolved into a logging and fishing village but now has an economy based on arts and tourism.
