Coldfoot

Coldfoot, as the name might suggest sits inside the Arctic Circle in Alaska’s Brooks Mountain Range at mile 175 of the Dalton Highway, providing a natural base for a variety of activities in this remote region. The Gates of the Arctic National Park and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in the surrounding Brooks Range wilderness that can easily be accessed from Coldfoot. In the summer, flightseeing, hiking, rafting, fishing, and exploring area mining roads are some of the many activities guests can experience. It is home to the Arctic Interagency Visitor Centre which has exhibits and interpretative programmes on the Arctic.

Originally named Slate Creek, the settlement of Coldfoot began around 1898 when thousands flooded to the area in search of gold. The name was changed when a group of prospectors got "cold feet" about spending winter in the district and headed south. They were right to be worried - in 1989 the temperature dropped to -63oC, the coldest ever recorded in North America!
